Milk or Graham Cracker??

Today, I had to choose between milk or graham crackers. That may not seem like much to you, but I literally stopped in the aisle in confusion, because I've never had to THINK about what I was putting in my basket. I budget, yes, but not being able to purchase a sweet snack for my family was kinda wild.

Forty-six, a career that’s supposed to be hitting its stride, two kids out-but still kinda in the nest, and a constant, gnawing anxiety about the rising costs of everything. That’s my story. Or at least, it was supposed to be.

Lately, it feels more like a tightrope walk over a chasm of rising costs and dwindling patience.

I’m not naive. I know the recent instability and uncertainty is coming from the tippy top of our government, but it’s still hitting a bit different. Is intentional? Is having an entire nation discombobulated the goal? If so, sir, I promise you got it! The constant anxiety of watching the grocery bill climb while my paycheck stays stubbornly stagnant. It’s the gas prices inching back up that make me wince every time I fill up, knowing that extra twenty dollars could have gone towards…well, you know…milk and graham crackers.

But even in these challenging times, we cannot allow ourselves to be defined by the squeeze. We cannot let the weight of economic hardship crush our spirit. We must remember who we are, what we’ve overcome, and the strength that resides within us.

This is where faith and self-determination become our lifelines. Thank God for Jesus!

How do we stay encouraged when the world feels like it’s crumbling?

  • Lean into your belief system: Whether it’s faith, spirituality, or a deep-seated belief in your own power, find that anchor. Spend time in prayer, meditation, or quiet reflection. Remind yourself that you are not alone, and that there is a purpose to your journey.

  • Focus on what you can control: We can’t control the economy, but we can control our mindset. Shift your focus from what you’re losing to what you still have. Find gratitude in the small things, the moments of joy, the connections with loved ones.

  • Embrace self-determination: Take ownership of your situation. Look for creative solutions. Explore new opportunities. Network, learn new skills, and refuse to be defined by limitations.

  • Build community: Connect with others who understand your struggles. Share your experiences, offer support, and create a network of strength. We are stronger together.

  • Practice self-care: In times of stress, it’s easy to neglect your own needs. Prioritize rest, healthy eating, and activities that bring you joy. Even small acts of self-care can make a big difference.

  • Remember your power: You are not a victim of circumstance. You are a powerful, resilient individual with the ability to overcome any challenge. Believe in yourself, trust your instincts, and never give up on your dreams.

As for me…I’m going back to get my graham crackers!
