Philander Smith University has received a transformative $3.9 million grant from Windgate Foundation to strengthen student affordability and expand access to higher education through a new need-based scholarship endowment.
The award includes a $3.75 million endowed gift designated for the Philander Smith University Need-Based Scholarship Endowment, along with a $150,000 bridge grant that will provide immediate scholarship assistance while the endowment is established.
Founded in 1877, Philander Smith University is one of Arkansas’ historically Black colleges and universities. It continues to serve as a cornerstone of higher education, leadership development, and opportunity for students across the region.
University leaders say these investments are designed to create both immediate and long-term impact by helping current students remain enrolled while building a permanent source of scholarship support for future generations of scholars, continuing the institution’s academic legacy.
“This extraordinary investment from the Windgate Foundation will strengthen affordability and help ensure that financial barriers do not hinder educational opportunity for generations of Philander Smith students,” said Dr. Maurice D. Gipson, President and CEO of Philander Smith University. “As we approach our 150th anniversary, we are deeply grateful to the Windgate Foundation for investing in the mission of our institution and the future of our scholars.”
Approved by the Windgate Foundation Board in April 2026, the grant reflects the foundation’s ongoing commitment to educational access and sustainability. According to the foundation’s award letter, trustees expressed a desire to establish an endowed fund that would “perpetuate their giving to the needs of the organization long beyond their lifetime.”
Financial aid remains one of the determining factors in whether students can continue their college education. University officials say the new funding will help reduce financial barriers and provide greater stability for students pursuing their academic and professional goals.
“For many students, scholarship support is the difference between stopping out and staying the course,” Gipson added. “This transformative award helps ensure that talented, determined scholars have the opportunity to continue their education and fulfill their purpose through Philander Smith University.”
