FAMILY & RELATIONSHIPS  //  Valentine's Day

A Quarantined Valentine's Day

by Dianna Donahue - Feb.01.2021

The season of Love is upon us, but now – since the pandemic – celebrating at home may not be that enticing for a Valentine’s vibe. I mean, celebrating the holiday at home is not an uncommon thing. In fact, many people prefer this over large crowds, long waiting lists, and option redundancy. But there is something about not having another option that causes a little melancholy towards the day. If this is you, it’s time for you to use your (or someone else’s) Creativity card to come up with an indoor ambiance that you think your valentine will enjoy and execute it.

First rule of thumb - you have to commit to the idea! Be as thorough and over-the-top as you can with whichever theme you choose – the décor, your outfit, their outfit, the food, the ambiance, the babysitter, the gifts – it all matters, and doesn’t have to be expensive if you so choose. Sound corny? Maybe. But it has the potential to achieve a reconnection that you and your significant other need. Plus, it can relieve any pandemic blues lingering around your home.

Second rule of thumb - be flexible and let the night breathe. It’s okay if everything doesn’t go as planned. The goal is to enjoy a day with just you and babe. With a little creativity and intent, you can pull off a great Valentine’s Day. Even if your idea seems insignificant, go for it anyway. You’d be surprised by how much your effort will be appreciated over any gift you could buy.

Third rule of thumb - don’t be afraid to ask for help if you don’t know what to do. You didn’t ask me for my help, but I’m giving it to you anyway – here are ten ideas for celebrating Valentine’s Day at home. This is actually enough to fill most—if not all—of your day! You’re welcome.

SPA DAY
Change the scenery in your house or bedroom to reflect that of relaxation. You can give each other massages, manicures, pedicures, or facials; or pay an in-home professional to do it. A little Zen music, candles, fresh white linens, oils, lotions, hot water, and massage stones...VIOLA!

PHOTO SHOOT
Whether you pay a professional or set up a tripod and the self-timer feature on your camera, capture the dopeness of your relationship with pictures! Pick a look—color scheme, vibe, era, theme, etc.—and snap away. Great keepsakes for years to come.

FUN WITH LIQUOR
If you’re a couple that enjoys your spirits, try new ones. You can learn or create a signature drink – themed after a milestone in your relationship, or you can buy various wines that you think might be interesting. A bonus for this is you’re safe in your home, so you can get as throwed as you want!

BINGE & CHILL
Some couples just need a babysitter to do nothing quietly. And that’s cool, too! A perfect Valentine’s day can be you, your boo, some snacks, a TV, and a streaming app. Just make sure there’s some physical contact—snuggling, laying across the lap, head on the shoulder...something!

TREATS BUFFET
Whatever you decide to do, make sure you include a setup of your boo’s favorite treats. That way, they can pick at it throughout the entire day.  This is a great way to show your effort of making them feel special and that you’re paying attention to their little quirks.

BE THE CHEF
Cooking for your Boo is a great romantic gesture, but make sure you can execute it correctly! Whether you pay a professional or you practice a few times with a YouTube tutorial, you can’t go wrong with a good home-cooked meal for Valentine’s. Especially if it’s their favorite foods - wink!

BREAKFAST IN BED
Not all couples have the luxury of having the entire day to celebrate Valentine’s, so pick a time of the day and make it work. Breakfast in bed is ideal and will have Babe beaming all day. Top it off with some flowers or lunch delivered to their job, and BOOM…you are a Valentine’s Day champ.

Picture
LOVE NOTES
Couples tend to forget how important it is to affirm one another, but who better to be affirmed by than the love of your life. In the days leading to Valentine’s, each of you write 5-10 love notes telling the other what you love about them. Then take turns reading each one aloud to each other on Valentine’s. Your notes can be humorous, but make sure to include things of substance, as well.

GETTIN’ IT ON
So yeah...I think this goes without saying; however, on this day, include as much intimacy as you possibly can. Especially if either of you has been lazy, redundant, or passive the other 355 days of the year. And yes, life has been stressful, but now it’s time to hit the reset button. Hit it as many times as y’all can stand until there’s happy in your Valentine. Just saying.

SET THE AMBIANCE WITH DECORATIONS
Picture

One of the most effective ways to pull off a romantic atmosphere is with decorations. It sets the energy of your intentions and showcases your effort to make the day special. Sometimes accomplishing an ideal atmosphere can be a little overwhelming if you go at it yourself, so I suggest hiring a little help from Malisa Morris, owner of Events & Decor by Malisa.

With the assistance of her daughter, Alana, this duo has provided their clients with gorgeous décor since 2017. Whether it's a shower, themed parties, interior decorating, wedding and reception décor, balloon arrangements, or an intimate in-home setting, Malisa can get you right! Not sure what you want your décor to be? No worries! Malisa and Alana are great at using their imaginations to create precisely what you didn't know you wanted.

Malisa's skillset can compliment either of the previously stated celebration ideas - there is no design concept too big or small or budget that she can't use. The logistics are professionally worked out during your consultation, including discussing your vision, theme, preferences, and budget. Then a mock design is created from the information you provided, adjusting as needed. Once you’re satisfied with the mock design, preparation to execute your décor begins and culminates on your event date.
